The Burnaby Family

 Colonel Gustavus Burnaby

Colonel Fred Gustavus Burnaby was born in Somerby Hall

His Father was Rev. Gustavus Andrew Burnaby.

He married Elizabeth Hawkins-Whitshed and had one son Harry Gustavus Burnaby.

                                                   Elizabeth Hawkin-Whitshed

Even before Elizabeth was married she owned over  1310 acres of land in West Tallaght and 560 acres in Killincarrig. All these became the Burnaby Estate after her marriage.

    Harry Gustavus Burnaby

Harry was born in Greystones in 1880.

He was the only son of Fred and Elizabeth Burnaby.

A year after his birth Harry's father was promoted Colonel in chief in his regiment.

                                                                    Gustavus Andrew Burnaby

Gustavus Burnaby was Fred's father

He worked as a minister in England.

He wanted Harry to be born in England but Fred and Elizabeth went to Greystones to give birth to their son

 Mrs. Burnaby

Mrs. Burnaby was Fred Burnaby's mother

She was the wife of Rev. Gustavus Andrew Burnaby

She was the first person to see Harry and it was her idea to name him that.

                                Frost bite

On November 30th 1875 Colonel Fred Burnaby found himself travelling through Asia and dodging Russian officials who had banned European travellers. Carrying light luggage he crossed 300 miles of the Steppe on horse back, but suffered frostbite when winter set in.

He reached the fort at Khiva, to discover his commander in chief had sent a telegraph ordering his return to England. Again he dodged Russian officials and on his return published a book called 'A Ride To Khiva'

                                                                       The Burnaby Estate

The Burnaby Estate originally belonged to  Elizabeth Hawkins-Whitshed

It consisted of 1310 acres in West Tallaght and 560 acres in Killincarrig.

Many people thought that Fred Burnaby married Elizabeth so he could own all the land.

The land that Elizabeth inherited from her father became the Burnaby Estate after her marriage
