Frost bite
On November 30th 1875 Colonel Fred
Burnaby found himself travelling through Asia and dodging Russian officials who
had banned European travellers. Carrying light luggage he crossed 300 miles of
the Steppe on horse back, but suffered frostbite when winter set in.
He reached the
fort at Khiva, to discover his commander in chief had sent
a telegraph ordering his return to England. Again he dodged Russian officials
and on his return published a book called 'A Ride To Khiva'
