On the 7th March it was all action in St.
Brigid;s school with the energy fun day. They were several stations and
each one explored various aspects of energy.

Mechanical Energy |
There was an energy funday
in the hall. I was in charge of table 1 and was showing people three K-Nex
models and some water energy. I started on an
elastic band powered car that you wound up
at the wheels and it drove off. The car used kinetic
energy and had potential energy in the
wheels. Next I showed everyone a crane. There was a handle on the side
which when you turned it pulled up a cup this was mechanical.
The last model I showed everyone was a water/windmill that when you turned
the mill cogs and wheels
turned around inside and they made a stick on the end turn and it
was able to lift things off the ground this was kinetic
energy. When I showed everyone these things I was trying to show them that
you do not need batteries and electricity to make things work. After I had
shown everyone the K-Nex models I moved on to water. There was a mini
water wheel that when you poured water into the
funnel it made things spin and move.
I was trying to explain that we don’t need any electricity to
make things move, spin, drive, and work. There was
only one thing that not everyone got to see but
every second group or so did. I got a bottle and made three holes
in the side of it, covered the holes with tape, filled the bottle with
water and hung from a tree when I took the tape of the water poured out
from the sides and the bottle started to spin. Everyone thought that it
was the wind making it spin but I told them that when the water came out
it was like an energy that turned
the bottle, and everyone thought that it was a cool way to water plants.
The energy funday was a huge success and everyone had fun.

Our Volcano |
Chemical Energy |
Mr. Dodd's 5th
class were in charge of this station as we had done some experiments in
our class before Energy Day. The best fun was the volcano. The
group who made this were Naomi, Robyn, William, Patric and Jennifer and
som of our friends helped too.
First we had to make the volcano. We used
plasticine to form a mountain around a bowl. We got smaill stones
and placed them around the base. Mr. Dodd and some of us brought in
the ingredients for our chemical volcanol. These are the
ingredients: two tsps of vineagar, two tsps of bread soda, two tsps
of washing crystals, one lid of red dye and lots of lemon juice.
We had to tell each class who came to visit that these
ingredients reacted against one another to cause the eruption. The
younger classes were fascinated. Some people thought it was the best
station!
We also showed them that Alka Seltzer reacts in
water. We had great fun on Energy Day |
