Curriculum

PRIMARY SCHOOL CURRICULUM

The curriculum is presented in seven subject areas, some of which are further sub-divided into subjects. These are:
1. Language (Gaeilge and English)
2. Mathematics
3. Social, Environmental and Scientific Education (SESE) - History, Geography and Science
4. Social, Personal Health Education (SPHE)
5. Arts Education (Visual Arts, Musci and Drama)
6. Physical Education
7. Religion

Languages

English
The English curriculum is structured to offer children a total language experience in which oral language, reading and writing are fully integrated.

An Ghaeilge
Cumarsáid agus úsáid na teanga mar theanga bheo an dá ghné is suntasaí den churaclam Gaeilge. Gaeilge is a spoken language and emphasis is on using Gaeilge throughout the school day.

Mathematics

The five strands in the mathematics curriculum are number, algebra, shape and space, measures and data.

S.E.S.E

Science
The four strands of the curriculum are living things, energy and forces, materials and environmental awareness.

History
The strands in the history curriculum are:

  • Local Studies
  • Story
  • Early people and ancient societies
  • Life, society, work and culture in the past
  • Politics, conclict and society
  • Eras of change and conflict
  • Continuity and change over time


Geography
The three strands are human environments, natural environments and environmental awareness and care.

Arts Education

Music
The three strands are listening/resonding, performing and composing.

Visual Arts
The six strands are drawing, paint, print, clay, construction and fabric and fibre.

Drama

Physical Education

The six strands are athletics, dance, outdoor and adventure activities, games, aquatics and gymnastics.

SPHE

SPHE takes place in a number of ways in the school and the involvement of parents at all stages of the programme is essential for its effectiveness. Children learn through experiencing a positive school climate and atmosphere and by exploring aspects of the curriculum through relevant subject areas. It includes RSE (Relationships and Sexuality Education), Stay Safe and the Substance Abuse Prevention Programme.
