Our Green School
Home Day of action

St. Brigids is enrolled in the green school programme. The green school flag is awarded by An Taisce in conjunction with  Wicklow County Council.

Green school (or in Europe called Eco - schools) is a European Initiative. Green schools are designed to make environmental awareness and action  an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of a school for all its pupils.

It is a long term  programme - the  award  once  achieved needs  to be renewed every  two years.  The  award will  take  the  form  of  a  green flag which can be flown outside the school or displayed in the foyer.

We formed our committee in spring 2002  Initially we had many visits by Máire Byrne and her assistant. They introduced us to the seven point programme.  We have worked really hard at trying to achieve our 7 steps. In spring 2005 we were successful and have been awarded our green flag.

We then had to focus on energy and much work was done on this by the Green School Committee.

Our green flag was renewed in  June 2007.

Many thanks to all the people who were involved in this!

Spring is here and we have embarked on a mini-garden project. Parents Claire Hawker, Julie Watson and Sarah Murty are steering this project. Joana Krysa helped also. 4th and 5th clases have planted potatoes in special potato grow bags. We are hopeful of a good crop display in June. Our 3rd classes have planted pumpkin seeds in pots. They will plant them out into their own gardens and hopefully will display their crop next October.

Our caretaker Michael has prepared a square metre garden plot in the front yard. The soil is rich with compost from our own compost bin. He recycled old blackboards to make the sides. Our 1st and 2nd classes will plant this area with early cropping carrots, spring onions and lettuce. We will be busy watering and minding these seeds.
